Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Expand (x + 9)(x − 9).

  1. x² − 18x − 81
  2. x² − 9
  3. x² − 81
  4. x² + 81
Show solution
  1. a = x, b = 9.
  2. a² = x², b² = 81.
  3. Answer: x² − 81.

Answer: x² − 81

Example 2 · level 2

Expand (x + 3)(x + 1).

  1. x² + 4x + 3
  2. x² + 4x − 3
  3. x² + 3
  4. x² + 3x + 4
Show solution
  1. a + b = 3 + 1 = 4.
  2. ab = 3 × 1 = 3.
  3. So (x + 3)(x + 1) = x² + 4x + 3.

Answer: x² + 4x + 3

Example 3 · level 3

Use an identity to find 56².

Show solution
  1. 56² = (50 + 6)².
  2. Using (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²: 2,500 + 600 + 36.
  3. = 3,136.

Answer: 3,136
