Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Point P is 7 units to the right of the y-axis and 5 units above the x-axis. What are the coordinates of P?

  1. (7, −5)
  2. (5, 7)
  3. (7, 5)
  4. (−7, 5)
Show solution
  1. Across: 7 units to the right of the y-axis → x = 7.
  2. Up/down: 5 units above the x-axis → y = 5.
  3. P = (7, 5).

Answer: (7, 5)

Example 2 · level 2

Point P is 5 units to the right of the y-axis and 1 unit above the x-axis. What are the coordinates of P?

  1. (1, 5)
  2. (−5, 1)
  3. (5, 1)
  4. (5, −1)
Show solution
  1. Across: 5 units to the right of the y-axis → x = 5.
  2. Up/down: 1 unit above the x-axis → y = 1.
  3. P = (5, 1).

Answer: (5, 1)

Example 3 · level 3

Point P is on the y-axis and 3 units below the x-axis. What are the coordinates of P?

  1. (0, 3)
  2. (−3, 0)
  3. (1, −3)
  4. (0, −3)
Show solution
  1. Across: on the y-axis → x = 0.
  2. Up/down: 3 units below the x-axis → y = −3.
  3. P = (0, −3).

Answer: (0, −3)
