Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

A 570 m long Vande Bharat Express on the Delhi–Agra route runs at 108 km/h. How many seconds does it take to cross a signal pole?

Show solution
  1. Speed = 108 × 5/18 = 30 m/s.
  2. Time = 570 ÷ 30 = 19 s.

Answer: 19 seconds

Example 2 · level 2

A 60 m long goods train running at 36 km/h crosses a 130 m long platform at Ahmedabad station. How many seconds does it take?

Show solution
  1. Distance = 60 + 130 = 190 m.
  2. Speed = 36 × 5/18 = 10 m/s.
  3. Time = 190 ÷ 10 = 19 s.

Answer: 19 seconds

Example 3 · level 3

Two trains, 420 m and 420 m long, run on parallel tracks between Ahmedabad and Vadodara at 108 km/h and 36 km/h in opposite directions. How many seconds do they take to cross each other completely?

Show solution
  1. Relative speed = 144 km/h × 5/18 = 40 m/s.
  2. Distance = 420 + 420 = 840 m.
  3. Time = 840 ÷ 40 = 21 s.

Answer: 21 seconds
