How to Edit a PDF Free: Add Text, White-out, Highlight and Sign
Add text and annotations to a PDF
- Open Edit PDF and add your PDF file from your device.
- Choose the Text tool, click where you want to type and enter your text. Adjust the size and colour to match the document.
- Use White-out to cover a small mistake or an empty box, then add corrected text on top if needed.
- Use Highlight or Draw to mark important lines, tick boxes or circle figures.
- Add a picture, such as a stamp, logo or photo, and resize it on the page.
- Save and download the edited PDF, then open it to check every change before sharing.
What 'editing a PDF' usually means
PDF was designed to look the same everywhere, not to be edited like a Word document. Inside a PDF, text is often stored as individually positioned letters or fragments, without the paragraphs and line wrapping you see in a word processor. That is why changing a sentence in the middle of a PDF is much harder than it looks.
Fortunately, most everyday 'edits' do not need that. In practice, people want to:
- Fill in a form that has no fillable fields, such as a printed application or declaration.
- Add a date, name, reference number or short note.
- Cover a small mistake and write the correction on top.
- Highlight clauses in a contract or figures in a statement.
- Draw a tick, circle or arrow.
- Add a company stamp, logo, photo or signature image.
All of these work by adding new content on top of the page, and that is exactly what Edit PDF does.
What you can do with Edit PDF
| Tool | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Add text | Type new text anywhere on the page | Filling forms, dates, names, notes |
| White-out | Places an opaque box over part of the page | Hiding a typo or blank line before writing over it |
| Highlight | Translucent colour over existing content | Marking key clauses, totals or instructions |
| Draw | Freehand lines and shapes | Ticks, circles, arrows, quick sketches |
| Add picture | Places an image you choose on the page | Stamps, logos, photos, signature images |
Everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read and changed on your own device, which matters when you are editing things like salary slips, rental agreements or ID copies.

White-out is not redaction
This is the most important point in this guide. A white-out box only covers content visually. The original text, numbers or image underneath are usually still in the file. Someone can often reveal them by selecting and copying the text, by searching inside the PDF, or by removing the box in another editor.
Watch outNever use white-out, a black box or a highlighter to hide an Aadhaar number, PAN, bank account number, salary figure or anything else confidential. Use Redact PDF instead, which removes the content underneath permanently.
Redact PDF works differently: you mark the areas to hide, and the tool removes what is underneath, not just what you can see. After redaction, there is nothing left to copy or recover from those areas. Use white-out for appearance (tidying a form, covering a typo) and redaction for privacy (hiding information before you share).
A good check after redacting: open the file, press Ctrl+F (or use the search option on your phone) and search for part of the hidden text. If it is found, it was not removed.
Changing existing text: what works and what does not
Edit PDF does not change existing text in place. You cannot click into an existing sentence and retype it so the paragraph reflows around your change. We would rather be clear about that than let you discover it halfway through a task.
You have two good options depending on how much needs changing:
- Small changes such as a wrong date, a misspelt name or one figure: white-out the old text and add the new text on top, matching the size and colour as closely as you can. For a document that matters legally, redact the old value first so it cannot be recovered, then add the new one.
- Large changes such as rewriting paragraphs or updating a CV: convert the file with PDF to Word, make your edits in a word processor, then save it as a PDF again.
Conversion works best on PDFs that were originally made from a document. Scanned PDFs are pictures of text, so they convert less cleanly. Our guides on converting PDF to editable Word and converting Word to PDF without breaking formatting cover the round trip in detail.
Signing, stamping and filling forms
Many people open a PDF editor because a form needs filling and signing. Edit PDF handles the filling: add text in each box, tick options with the draw tool and place a stamp image if your organisation uses one.
For the signature itself, Sign PDF is designed for the job. You can type, draw or upload a signature image and place it precisely. Bear in mind that this is a visual electronic signature, not a certificate-based digital signature. Our guide on how to sign a PDF online explains the difference and when Indian processes need a DSC or Aadhaar eSign instead.
- Fill all text fields first, then sign last, so you do not have to re-sign after a correction.
- Use a picture of your stamp on a white or transparent background so it looks clean on the page.
- If the form will be printed, check that your added text is not too close to the page edges.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF for free?
Edit PDF adds new content on top of the page and does not reflow existing text. For small fixes, white-out the old text and type the new value over it. For larger rewrites, convert the file with PDF to Word, edit it, and save it as a PDF again.
Is white-out safe for hiding my Aadhaar or bank details?
No. White-out only hides content visually, and the original information usually remains in the file. Use Redact PDF, which removes the content underneath permanently, and then search the file to confirm it is gone.
Will editing a PDF add a watermark?
No. IndiaDigital does not add watermarks or branding to your files, and there is no sign-up or paid tier to unlock clean downloads.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Yes, you can add text, highlights, drawings and images on top of a scanned page in the same way. You cannot change the scanned words themselves because they are part of a picture, so white-out and write over them if needed.
Does Edit PDF work on mobile?
Yes, it works in modern mobile browsers. Placing small text precisely is easier on a larger screen, so for detailed forms a laptop or tablet may be more comfortable.
