Art and Culture: Temples, Dances and World Heritage
The three temple styles, the classical dances and their States, and India’s World Heritage Sites
Read a temple by its tower
Look at the tower first. A tall, curving shikhara over the sanctum means Nagara, the north Indian style of Khajuraho and the Sun Temple at Konark. A stepped, pyramid-like vimana, often with huge gateway gopurams, means Dravida, the south Indian style of the Chola temples at Thanjavur. A mix of the two, common in Karnataka under the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, is called Vesara.
- Nagara: shikhara · Dravida: vimana and gopuram · Vesara: a blend
- Pattadakal in Karnataka has temples in both northern and southern styles
Summary
Indian temples are usually grouped into three styles. The Nagara style of north India has a curving tower, the shikhara, rising over the sanctum, as at Khajuraho and Konark. The Dravida style of south India has a pyramid-like tower called the vimana and, in later temples, tall gateways called gopurams, as at the Brihadisvara temple of Thanjavur built under Rajaraja Chola I. The Vesara style of the Deccan blends the two, as in many Chalukya and Hoysala temples.
India’s classical dances each belong to a region. Bharatanatyam comes from Tamil Nadu, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam from Kerala, Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, Odissi from Odisha, Manipuri from Manipur, Sattriya from the monasteries (sattras) of Assam, and Kathak from north India. They share roots in the Natyashastra, an ancient text on drama and dance traditionally ascribed to Bharata, which describes how emotions (rasa) are shown through gesture and expression.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place judged so important that it belongs to all humanity. India’s first sites, inscribed in 1983, were Ajanta, Ellora, Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal. Most of India’s sites are cultural, some are natural, such as Kaziranga, and Khangchendzonga in Sikkim is India’s only mixed site. Recent additions are favourites in exams: Ramappa Temple and Dholavira (2021), Santiniketan and the Hoysala temples (2023), and the Moidams of Assam (2024).
