The three phases, Gandhi’s movements, and why each event led to the next
From petitions to boycott
It began with educated Indians asking politely. The Congress was founded in 1885 and held its first session in Bombay. When Curzon partitioned Bengal in 1905, people felt that petitions were not enough. The Swadeshi movement asked them to boycott British goods, and leaders like Tilak, Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal demanded more. The Moderates and Extremists split at Surat in 1907, and the partition was annulled in 1911.
- 1906: Muslim League founded at Dacca
- 1916: Lucknow Pact between the Congress and the League
Summary
The freedom struggle is the most asked part of history in both UPSC and MPSC prelims. Learn it in three phases. The Moderates (1885 to 1905) sent petitions and speeches after the Indian National Congress was founded in 1885. The Extremists and the Swadeshi movement (1905 to 1918) answered Curzon’s Partition of Bengal with boycott and demanded more, and the two groups split at Surat in 1907. The Gandhian phase of mass movements ran from 1919 to 1947.
Gandhi returned from South Africa in 1915 and first tested satyagraha on local problems: indigo farmers at Champaran in Bihar in 1917, and peasants at Kheda in Gujarat in 1918. The Rowlatt Act and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 angered the whole country. He launched Non-Cooperation in 1920 and called it off after the violence at Chauri Chaura in 1922. The Lahore Congress demanded Purna Swaraj in December 1929, and the Dandi March of 1930 began Civil Disobedience.
The Gandhi-Irwin Pact of 1931 paused Civil Disobedience, and the Poona Pact of 1932 settled the question of seats for the depressed classes. During the Second World War, the August Offer of 1940 and the Cripps Mission of 1942 failed to promise freedom, so on 8 August 1942 the Congress passed the Quit India resolution and Gandhi gave the call "Do or Die". After the war the Cabinet Mission came in 1946, and Mountbatten’s 3 June Plan of 1947 led to independence with partition.1931 के गांधी-इरविन समझौते ने सविनय अवज्ञा को रोका, और 1932 के पूना समझौते ने दलित वर्गों की सीटों का सवाल सुलझाया।
