A city built to a plan

Think of a Harappan city as a well-run modern colony. A raised Citadel held the important buildings, and the Lower Town held the homes. Bricks were of one standard size everywhere, streets crossed at right angles, and covered drains ran beside them. Such planning tells us there was some authority that could organise labour and set rules.

Summary

About 4,500 years ago, people along the Indus and its neighbouring rivers built planned cities. The mature phase of this Bronze Age civilisation lasted from about 2600 to 1900 BCE. It is called the Harappan Civilisation after Harappa, the first site to be found, in 1921, by Daya Ram Sahni. Mohenjodaro was found in 1922 by R. D. Banerji. Both lie in Pakistan today: Harappa on the Ravi in Punjab and Mohenjodaro on the Indus in Sindh.

Harappan towns were carefully planned. Many were divided into a raised Citadel for important buildings and a Lower Town for homes. Houses were built of baked bricks of a fixed size, streets ran in a grid, and every street had a covered drain. Each famous site is remembered for one find: the Great Bath at Mohenjodaro, a dockyard at Lothal, a ploughed field at Kalibangan, a clay plough at Banawali, and reservoirs and a signboard at Dholavira.

The Harappan script, found mostly on seals, has still not been read. After about 1900 BCE the cities declined. Historians do not give one single cause: they point to a mix of rivers drying up or changing course, floods, overuse of land and forests, and the weakening of the authority that held the cities together. In exams, be careful with any option that names only one cause as certain.
