CLASS 10 SCIENCE · MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF ELECTRIC CURRENT

Magnetic effects: Fleming's rules and directions

Right-hand thumb rule: field around a wire. Fleming's left-hand rule (motor): forefinger = field, middle finger = current, thumb = force. Fleming's right-hand rule (generator): forefinger = field, thumb = motion, middle finger = induced current.

Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

The magnetic field inside a long current-carrying solenoid is:

  1. zero
  2. circular around the axis
  3. strongest near the walls and zero at the centre
  4. nearly uniform, along its axis
Show solution
  1. Answer: nearly uniform, along its axis.

Answer: nearly uniform, along its axis

Example 2 · level 2

A straight wire carries current flowing vertically upwards in a uniform magnetic field directed south. Using Fleming's left-hand rule, the force on the wire is directed:

  1. south
  2. north
  3. vertically downwards
  4. east
Show solution
  1. Field: south; current: vertically upwards.
  2. By the left-hand rule (F along I × B), the force is east.

Answer: east

Example 3 · level 3

A beam of electrons moves north through a magnetic field directed west. The force on the beam is directed:

  1. south
  2. vertically downwards
  3. west
  4. north
Show solution
  1. Conventional current: south.
  2. Field: west.
  3. Force (left-hand rule): vertically downwards.

Answer: vertically downwards
