Sharp young peaks, rounded old hills
A new brick has sharp corners; an old one, rubbed for years, is rounded. Mountains age the same way. The Himalaya are young, so they are high, steep and sharp. The Aravalli, the Vindhya, the Satpura and the Ghats have been worn by wind and rain for a very long time, so they are lower and rounded.

A pass is a low gap in a mountain wall, the easiest place for a road or trade route to cross. In the Himalaya most passes end in "La", the Tibetan word for pass. From west to east: the Karakoram Pass (Ladakh and Xinjiang), Khardung La (Leh to Nubra), Zoji La (Srinagar to Kargil and Leh), Banihal (Jammu to Srinagar), Rohtang (Kullu to Lahaul), Shipki La (the Satluj into Tibet), Lipulekh (Kailash Mansarovar route), Nathu La (Sikkim), Bomdi La (towards Tawang) and the Diphu Pass (near the India, China and Myanmar tri-junction).
