Soil: a child of rock and weather

Dig a deep pit and you see layers. At the top is dark soil rich in rotted leaves (humus). Below it is lighter soil with broken bits of rock. At the bottom is the solid parent rock. Rain, heat and roots slowly turn the rock at the bottom into the soil at the top, and the kind of rock and the kind of weather decide what soil you get.

  • Five factors: parent rock, climate, relief, living things and time

Summary

Soil is broken rock mixed with rotted plants and animals. What a soil is like depends on its parent rock, the climate, the slope of the land, the plants and animals living on it, and time. The same rock gives very different soils under heavy rain and under desert sun. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research groups India’s soils into eight major types: alluvial, black, red and yellow, laterite, arid, mountain (forest), saline and peaty.

Alluvial soil is the most widespread. Rivers laid it across the northern plains and in the deltas of the east coast. New alluvium near rivers, renewed by floods every year, is khadar; older alluvium on higher ground, with lime nodules called kankar, is bhangar. It is very fertile and grows wheat, rice and sugarcane. Black soil, or regur, formed from the lava rocks of the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. It is clayey, holds moisture for a long time, cracks deeply when dry, and is ideal for cotton. Red soil forms on old crystalline rocks; iron makes it red, and it looks yellow when hydrated.

Laterite soil is what remains after heavy rain in hot areas washes away the useful nutrients, a process called leaching. Its name comes from the Latin word for brick, and it is used to make bricks; with manure it grows cashew, tea and coffee. Arid soil in the desert is sandy and salty, with a hard kankar layer below. Mountain soils change with height. Saline soil (usar) has too much salt and is improved by adding gypsum. Peaty soil, full of decayed plant matter, forms in very wet areas. Soil is lost to erosion by running water and wind; contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping and shelter belts of trees help keep it in place.
