One chair, three names
The head of British India kept the same chair but changed its name twice. In 1773 it was the Governor-General of Bengal (Warren Hastings). In 1833 it became the Governor-General of India (William Bentinck). In 1858, when the Crown took over from the Company, the holder also became the Viceroy (Canning). The last Viceroy was Lord Mountbatten.
- Hastings: first GG of Bengal, not of India
Summary
The East India Company came to trade, but by the 1770s it was ruling Bengal. The Regulating Act of 1773 made Warren Hastings the first Governor-General of Bengal. The Charter Act of 1833 turned the post into Governor-General of India, first held by Lord William Bentinck, and after 1858 the same head of government was also called the Viceroy, the representative of the British Crown. Lord Canning became the first Viceroy.
Each Governor-General is remembered for one big policy. Cornwallis fixed land revenue for ever with the zamindars through the Permanent Settlement of 1793. Wellesley’s Subsidiary Alliance of 1798 made Indian rulers keep and pay for British troops. Bentinck abolished sati in 1829. Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse took over States whose ruler died without a natural son, such as Satara, Nagpur and Jhansi, and he opened the first railway line, from Bombay to Thane, in 1853.
Anger at such policies burst out in 1857. Sepoys feared that new cartridges were greased with the fat of cows and pigs, and on 10 May 1857 soldiers at Meerut rose up and marched to Delhi, where they declared the old Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar their leader. The revolt spread to Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi and Bihar. After it was put down, an Act of 1858 ended the Company’s rule and placed India directly under the British Crown.
