The lives of the Buddha and Mahavira, what they taught, and the four Buddhist councils
Why new ideas spread
Picture the Ganga plains 2,500 years ago: busy new towns, traders on the roads, and costly rituals that few could afford. The Buddha and Mahavira offered a simpler way to live a good life, and they spoke in Pali and Prakrit, the everyday languages of the people. That is why townspeople, traders and farmers listened.
- Buddha taught in Pali; Mahavira in Prakrit
Summary
In the 6th century BCE the Ganga plains were changing fast, with new kingdoms, towns and trade. Vedic rituals had become costly, and animal sacrifices hurt farmers who needed their cattle. Many thinkers questioned the old ways. Two of them, Gautama Buddha and Vardhamana Mahavira, spoke in the languages of ordinary people, Pali and Prakrit, instead of Sanskrit, so that everyone could understand them.
The Buddha was born a prince at Lumbini, in present-day Nepal. He gained enlightenment under a peepal tree at Bodh Gaya, gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Varanasi, and died at Kushinagar. He taught the Four Noble Truths: life has suffering, suffering has a cause in desire, it can end, and the Eightfold Path leads to its end. His Middle Path avoided both luxury and harsh self-punishment. After his death, four councils met at Rajagriha, Vaishali, Pataliputra and in Kashmir.
Mahavira was the 24th tirthankara of the Jains; Jain tradition counts Rishabhanatha as the first. He was born at Kundagrama near Vaishali and died at Pava (Pavapuri). He stressed ahimsa, non-violence, very strictly, and taught the three jewels: right faith, right knowledge and right conduct. Because farming harms small creatures, many Jains took up trade, which is one reason Jainism grew strong among merchants.
