One country, six kinds of land

Picture India as a house. The Himalaya are the high wall on the north. The Northern Plains are the big flat courtyard in front of the wall, filled with soil the rivers carry down. The Peninsular Plateau is the old raised floor to the south. The desert sits in the dry west corner, the coastal plains are the verandahs on both sides, and the islands are like small rooms set out at sea.

  • Oldest: Peninsular Plateau (part of Gondwana land)
  • Youngest: the Northern Plains, made of river silt

Summary

NCERT divides the land of India into six physical divisions: the Himalayan mountains, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the Coastal Plains and the Islands. They differ in age and in how they were made. The Peninsular Plateau is one of the oldest landmasses on earth, a piece of the ancient Gondwana land. The Himalaya are young fold mountains. The Northern Plains are the newest of all, built from silt brought down by rivers.NCERT

The Himalaya run as three parallel ranges. The northernmost, the Great Himalaya or Himadri, is the highest and most continuous, and stays under snow all year. South of it lies the Lesser Himalaya or Himachal, with the Pir Panjal and Dhaula Dhar ranges and valleys such as Kashmir, Kangra and Kullu. The outermost range, the Shiwaliks, is made of loose sediments. Flat valleys between the Himachal and the Shiwaliks are called duns, such as Dehra Dun. In the east, the Purvanchal hills (Patkai, Naga and Mizo hills) run along the border with Myanmar.

South of the plains, the Peninsular Plateau is a tableland of old, hard rocks. The Narmada splits it into the Central Highlands to the north and the triangular Deccan Plateau to the south. The Western Ghats on its west edge are higher and unbroken; the Eastern Ghats are lower and cut through by rivers. West of the Aravalli lies the sandy Indian Desert. The western coastal plain is narrow (Konkan, Kannad plain and Malabar coast), while the eastern one is wide (Northern Circar and Coromandel coast) and full of deltas. The Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian Sea are made of coral; the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal are the tops of a sunken mountain chain.
