Life certificate without flying home.

Indian pensions stop if the yearly life certificate is missed. From abroad you can usually do it digitally, or on paper signed by an authorised officer.

What to know, in order

  • Digital: the Jeevan Pramaan face authentication app works on a phone with your Aadhaar, if your pension bank and pension office accept it.
  • Paper: a life certificate signed by an officer of the Indian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate, or by a notary or bank official where you live, sent to your pension bank.
  • Central government pensioners give it every November; those aged 80 or more can give it from 1 October.
  • Keep the acknowledgement or the Jeevan Pramaan ID. Check with your pension bank which signatures abroad it accepts before you post anything.

Questions people ask

I do not have Aadhaar. Can I still use Jeevan Pramaan?

Jeevan Pramaan needs Aadhaar authentication. Without it, use the paper certificate signed by an Indian Mission officer or another signatory your bank accepts.

What if I miss the date?

The pension is held until the certificate reaches the bank, and arrears are usually paid after that. Send it as soon as you can.

Does this apply to EPS (EPFO) pension too?

EPS pensioners also give a yearly life certificate, valid for a year from the date given. Check the date on your last one.
