Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

An appliance draws 4 A from the 220 V mains. Find its power (in W).

Show solution
  1. P = 220 × 4 = 880 W.

Answer: 880 W

Example 2 · level 2

A 1000 W, 220 V appliance is used on the mains. Find the current it draws (in A, correct to 2 decimal places).

Show solution
  1. I = 1000 ÷ 220 = 4.55 A.

Answer: 4.55 A

Example 3 · level 3

In Vihaan's kitchen a 1500 W induction cooktop and a 440 W mixer run together on 220 V mains (in parallel). Find the total current drawn (in A, correct to 2 decimal places).

Show solution
  1. Total P = 1940 W.
  2. I = 1940 ÷ 220 = 8.82 A.

Answer: 8.82 A
